Steaming Treatment at Home

by Fleurzty on December 26, 2011

Long time readers of the blog know that I was in the habit of conditioning my hair spa style once a month. I sadly haven’t kept up with these treatments. As usual lack of time is the culprit. Today offered an unusual experience. I am home and Ty has a number of new toys and games that he barely notices me. My steamer is nicely tucked under my bathroom sink in the same space it has occupied since my last post concerning it in May. See it here! At the time I bought the steamer I was thoroughly convinced that I would use it regularly. Though that has not happened, I am glad that I own it for the times that I am able to use it, the experience is amazing and strengthening for my hair. In addition, I was offered a treatment in my last visit to the salon and I inquired about the price, only to find out that a single steaming treatment costs $40. Caring for your own hair and having the tools to do it effectively is a money saver (not to imply that a steamer is a must-have tool for healthy hair).

Onto my spa day today! I wet my hair in the shower for a few minutes. Once my hair was wet, I applied my conditioner. I used the Conditioning Hair Treatment by me, Dry Remedy by Aveda and Tea Tree Tingle by Trader Joe’s. I didn’t set out to use so many conditioners, but my hair felt particularly tingled and I kept applying more conditioner to it to fully coat my hair. I did not detangle prior to steaming. I worked the conditioning treatment through my hair from roots to tips and pinned it up.

I used my steaming towel to cover my face and prevent the drippies. I added a few drops of Hair and Scalp Serum on my scalp prior to seating underneath the steamer. I also added 2-3 drops of rosemary oil to the water in the steamer. If nothing else, it gave a nice smell to the water. The steamer ran for 15-20 minutes. I sat and read uninterrupted :)

My hair came out very soft and warm. It was still tangled but I could feel the difference. It was a lot easier to detangle. I used my new favorite detangling tool: the aveda brush. The large paddle helps with detangling small and large sections of hair without pulling my hair out. I was introduced to this brush at Revive. They use it for straightening, and I find that it works equally well for detangling my curls.

I proceeded to twist my hair. I now have happy, fluffy ringlets of twists all over my head. I will open up the twists in the morning and take pictures. My hair feels soft and moisturized.
