Color Questions Answered

Alright, I will now take the time to answer your coloring questions as best I can, starting with the most asked. I will be active in the comment section as well, as more questions are added to the list. So, be sure to read the comments.

What changes did you notice in your hair once you started using colors?

The first change I noticed was that my hair was drying faster after I conditioned. At first I liked the quicker drying time because I did not have to go to work with a wet blouse. Shortly thereafter, I came to realize that my hair was drying faster because it was actually becoming drier. So, I had to increase my conditioning.

Did the color dry your hair out?

Absolutely! As I said in the first response, my hair became considerably drier with more color applications. Deep conditioning became an essential part of my hair care regimen. I also noticed that my hair began to knot more on the ends. As a result, I had more frequent trims and retained less of my growth.

What color did you use to get the looks you showed?

I used Naturtint for most of my coloring. I quite frankly don’t think my hair could have handled the frequent hair dye with an ammonia-containing product. Naturtint proved to be a much gentler permanent dye for my hair. For the red color, I used G6; and once I was ready to go lighter, I mixed G6 and G7; eventually switched to using G7 only.

How did you apply the colors for best results?

I followed the directions on the box for all my coloring. The best way to use a hair dye safely is to follow the directions included in the product because they pertain to that particular product. I also used 2 boxes each time to make sure my hair was fully covered and that the color was even.

Would you ever color your hair again?

I have researched hair dyes, and because of the risks associated, I am trying to avoid them altogether. I do know however that I might color my hair again. I have in fact thought of alternating between a permanent dye and henna in the future to get a deep reddish gold color. It makes sense in my mind :) For now, my goal is health and length, so I am not going to follow my impulse to color, though I have to admit that doing this series has made me anxious to color again.

What’s the logic in alternating between a permanent dye and Henna? What kind of permanent dye would you use now because you said the one that you used,Naturtint, was gentler but you said that your hair dried out a lot. Why not just stick to Henna because you can add citrus to it to make the color lighter and to get different colors although we have ethnic hair. At least that’s what I understood from http://www.hennaforhair.com/mixes/. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Lovelyrett, I have personally not found a henna mix that lifts my hair color. After hennaing, my hair only looks red in the sun. I believe the henna site talks about henna not lightening hair, but I could be wrong. Whenever color is used, the hair requires more intense care to prevent dryness. So, my illogical reason for alternating between henna and dye was to get a lighter color without having to touch up frequently. Here’s the scenario I had in mind (if I were to color again). I would color and in the following months use henna to maintain the color. I would only use the hair dye again after significant growth to touch up. In the past, when I colored, I did touch ups every 4-6 weeks. These sessions would be replaced by henna. Secondly, I don’t think my hair would be as dry this time around because I know more about conditioning and I use a host of herbs and butters on my hair regularly. So, I’m thinking I’ll be able to prevent rather than treat the dryness.

So, is color bad for your hair period? I went to our local health food store and saw the Naturtint for a friend. I also saw Henna coloring as well. I just don’t want a lot of my grey to show. What can I do to cover that without doing all the coloring? Thanks sis!

A combination of Naturatint and Henna gave me the perfect color combination.

Now that I’ve achieved it, I use a monthly henna treatment to maintain it.

That is what I plan to do. In my mind, too, I think this will work: I’m planning to get highlights at Aveda (w/o bleach, if possible; if not I will just go for a lighter color). Once my hair is lightened to my liking, I want to henna over that. I want to do this so I can have a red (or auburn) color that will show up on my hair, in the sunlight or out.

Ok, I see. That sounds like it may do well. I get it.

I have been thinking about using another coloring option other than henna. I really like my henna and indigo results, but more and more it seems the indigo fades too quickly. I will have to look for the Naturatint. I love your color, by the way:).

Thank you so much for this. I was wondering why when I colored my hair it only took close to my root but the rest looked the same. It’s because I needed to use two boxes to achieve the full effect all over. It’s touchup day so I’ll get two, concentrated on the ends and then smooth all over and that should even everything out.
