If you follow any other hair blogs, you’ll come across this topic over and over again. I’m glad everyone is bringing attention to hair health and providing insightful information about how to protect our work.
I will borrow from a post I wrote last year, Winter Survival Guide, and share some basic, yet necessary tips with you this Fall.
Here are a few tips to help your family survive the dry winter months.
1. If you must use a shampoo, it is essential to use a moisturizing shampoo and not forgo the conditioner in your child’s hair.
2. Don’t skip the weekly deep treatments either. They will definitely help to bring back to the hair any moisture that might have been stripped between the indoor heat and dry, windy climate.
3. Moisture, moisture, moisture!!! Lock in the moisture added to the hair after a deep treatment and/or conditioner application. Butters and hair oils, such as Jojoba, Olive, Castor and Coconut oils work great at sealing moisture. Emulsify the butter of your choice in your hands and apply to the hair from roots to ends. Be sure to seal the ends to prevent splitting.
4. Avoid heat styling! I know the Holidays are particular times when our children endure the most heat application with the excessive blow drying and hot combing, but with the already harsh elements, their hair do not need any additional stress.
5. Use leave-in conditioners to refresh the hair on second and third day hair.
6. Protective style.
What are you ladies doing to protect your hair this season? What changes are you looking forward to?

Thanks for posting Fleurzty! These are great tips! I plan on continuing my current regimen of weekly shampooing and deep treating, followed by moisturizing with Qhemet Amla and Olive Heavy Cream, braiding my hair, and sealing with Hairveda CoCasta Shikakai Oil. This regmimen has kept my hair very moisturized and my ends looks great! I usually wear a satin sleep cap under my crocheted tams to protect my hair from the elements. Thanks again for posting!
Well, I haven’t applied heat for a while now and none since my BC. I don’t plan on doing so for a long time. I’m going to try to seal more and I may get braids as a protective style for a while. I’ll continue to co-wash, DC, and clarify (once a month) as I usually do.
I don’t know what else to do really being that my hair in a TWA. What did you do at this stage?
I am planning on using head wraps more this winter. I think I will also get braids with extensions during the coldest part of the winter.
I have begun to do protective styling. I am searching the ‘net for styles I can wear to work. I will also continue to moisturize and seal with oil.
First, I am so happy to see these last few post. You were truly missed. As for me, I need a DC. As far as styles, I may continue with flat twists and two strands, and I am researching locing right now.
My regimen will consist of weekly deep conditioning treatments, overnight with a plastic cap when the time permits. Herbal tea rinse once a week and Amla/Henna combo once a month. In addition, I am moisturizing daily, as needed, with a leave-in and shea butter and wearing a bun or twist up do for a protective styling. I’m trying to resist flat ironing for the holidays. Glad to hear from you.
I think the only things I’m going to change is stepping up the deep conditioning and start sealing my ends regularly. I’ll just continue my protective styles as usual.
i’ve actually been relying on the in-shower styling method to maintain proper moisture balance. i deep condition on the weekends and oil rinse once during the week. i moisturize with coconut oil and seal with shea butter. i refresh on the second day with a light water spritz and co-wash 3X a week to cleanse my scalp since i workout everyday.
