I like Elle magazine, not because I am fashion forward or interested in the various product reviews that are included in every issue, not even the wonderful articles, but because of the name. I have always been fond of the name Elle, to the point that I want to name my daughter Elle, if I have one in the future. So, when I see the magazine on the stand, it always draws my attention. Today, it grabbed my attention for yet another reason.
On the cover was the title 21 New Hair & Makeup Looks. I am very realistic about the image of hair in Hollywood and the fashion industry. Usually when magazines speak of hairstyles to love, I know that they are not speaking of my hair or styles that would not require me to straighten my hair. Yet, I picked up the magazine, and true enough the styles in question were not ones I would easily wear. My excitement actually came from an advertisement in the magazine, ad by TIGI featuring their CATWALK products. The products promise to deliver Your Highness volume. The Caucasian model has her hair voluminized and frizzed out to resemble textured hair in one of the pictures. In one of the other pictures, the model is wearing an updo that most of us can achieve without much trouble. Lastly, the full page picture featured the style you’ve seen here as the Princess Leia. I was so elated and could not wait to write this post.
Why so much excitement you ask? Well it isn’t about feeling better about my decision to wear my natural hair. It isn’t about validation, but rather the acknowledgement of just how beautiful textured hair truly is. Every strand is naturally plumped with volume, and a textured head has so much potential. Its versatility is unparalleled and it is time fashion catches on to what so many of us have known for so long: Our hair is truly AMAZING!
