I tried something old with something new

by Fleurzty on November 28, 2009

I was planning for my hair conditioning session, when I saw my only half-way used bentonite clay container. Before my Ayurvedic craze, I was using bentonite clay masks on my hair. They worked well, but I somehow have not made a clay mask for my hair and skin in over a year.

Today for one reason or another seemed like the perfect day to revisit bentonite clay. I made a mix containing bentonite clay, warm water and apple cider vinegar (another oldie ingredient that I love but have not used in a long time). I did not measure how much of each ingredient was added. The only guideline I have to offer for this mask is that it needs to be at a semi-solid consistency. It is best to also make the mask immediately before using, since the clay will begin to solidify shortly after it is made.

I used the same mask on my hair and face. For my hair–I wet my hair with warm water, wiped the drippies and began applying the mask. In the future, I will only mist my hair in preparation for this mask. It tends to drip, definitely a lot more than Amla. The mask was relatively easy to apply. My hair was also easy to manage with the bentonite clay. I was able to wrap my hair and keep it off my clothes. For my face–I applied a thin layer of the clay and left it on for 15-20 minutes, the recommended length of time on the jar. I washed my face well before my hair was ready to be washed. I left the clay for about 25-30 minutes in my hair.

The result

Face–my face felt very smooth, and I could see an immediate reduction of blackheads around my nose. A definite keeper! My face also felt very smooth and clean.

Hair–Splendid results there as well! Not only was my hair very clean, dark and shiny, it was also lightweight and fluffy after rinsing the treatment out. My hair did not have an initial hard feel to it at all either. I followed the treatment with something new…

TRESemme Moisture Rich conditioner for dry or damaged hair. It was on sale at the store, and I figured why not! I am so happy I picked up this conditioner. Oh la la indeed! My hair was thanking me. This conditioner reminds me of Aussie Moist conditioner. My list of affordable, drugstore conditioners is growing, and I could not be happier. I really liked how well this conditioner worked for me. Detangling my hair was very easy and it had great slip, even after rinsing.

I followed with an apple cider vinegar rinse. I used 1 tbs. of apple cider vinegar for 2 cups of water. I made four cups and them as a final rinse.

Styling

My hair felt very hydrated after this conditioning session. I was very pleased with the results. Styling was very simple and easy as well. I had to go out, so I put my hair in some large twists that I took out later in the day.

I only used my hair butter to style.

Results: Big, full twistouts! The smell of the apple cider vinegar lingered until my hair was fully dry. I can no longer smell it!

This is so ironic that you used your bentonite clay this weekend because that is exactly what I’m planning to do today. I have some in my product basket that I haven’t used in over 6 months only because I have been using others like amla, henna, brahmin, to name a few. However, I like the way my hair feels after using the clay. What I’m planning to do is make my mask with water only, mist my hair and cover hair and face for about 15- 25 minutes. I will follow with TJ moisturizing conditioner and rinse with a herbal tea mixture. I wish I were wearing my hair out but I plan on bunning the rest of the week. I need something easy going back to work. Thanks for sharing.

Pretty! I also have not used bentonite clay in a while. I am waiting on my order for blended beauty herbal reconditioner. I believe this does the same thing as the bentonite clay.

This week I am semi-bunning my hair. I have braided the front and put the back in a high bun. This is an easy protective style.

Happy Holidays, Fleurzty.

Shamefully, I have a full jar of bentonite clay that I have yet to try on my hair. With your results, I think I may pick it up. At least before the new year.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for this post! I took out my bentonite clay and did a treatment and DC last night. I used to do these all the time but as i started doing henna I pushed the bentonite to the back, well I still use it regularly as a face mask.

Your hair looks so beautiful!
