Homemade Deep Conditioners

by Fleurzty on January 16, 2009

Curly hair is naturally dry and craves moisture, so deep conditioning treatments are vital to your hair’s health. While there are many products that you can purchase to deep condition your hair, you can create very good, moisturizing and rebuilding conditioners with items that we’ve already discussed that you most likely have on hand as well.

Moisturizing Deep Conditioner
What You Will Need:
-    Cheapie, any conditioner will do. I normally use Suave for this mix.
-    Extra virgin or regular olive oil, based on preference. I use 2 to 3 tablespoons of EVOO.
-    Honey (1/4 cup or more depending on hair length)

Deep Treatment for Very Dry or Damaged Hair
What You Will Need
-    1 avocado (medium size)
-    1 ripe banana
-    EVOO or olive oil (2-3 tbs)
-    Honey (1/4 to 1/2 cup depending on hair length)
-    I add castor oil or jojoba oil sometimes, but it is a splurge

Mix the ingredients together in a small bowl and apply the treatment to your hair from root to tips. For the avocado mix, I use a hand mixer or a blender, otherwise I spend the entire day removing chunks of avocado from my hair. Cover your hair with a plastic cap or saran wrap and cover with a towel for optimal heat concentration. Allow the mix to stay in your hair for 30 minutes to an hour. Rinse and apply your leave-in conditioner.

I just found your site last night and I have been reading ever since! It is great. I am actually under the dryer after trying the deep conditioning mix recipe you provided! Thanks, I can’t wait to see how it turns out! :)

I use almost the same mix, but I use organic baby food (bananas) in my mix because it’s already smooth and washes out easily. I also add full fat yogurt which gives my hair protein (Protein is wonderful in my hair) and loosens the curl pattern. I skip the avocado because it does basically the same as bananas to my hair. I don’t need both.

I’ve been a little unkind to my hair lately so maybe I’ll try one of these treatments before I twist my hair tonight.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much for sharing!
I used the deep conditioning one, and it works wonders! My hair is so soft and shiny now. I’m definately going to do this more often!

Thank you sooo much
my hair is very dry and has many split end and is breking all over the place
lately, ive been using organic root stimulators hair mayo, but that hasnt done much, but ive seen a slight diff.
ill definetly be trying this recipe, but is it okay if i exclude the banana? it seems kind of uneccesry since there is already an avocado
please reply, and thank you

How much of the “cheapie” conditioner do you use for the moisturizing DC. I have a TWA.

The honey/ olive oil deep conditioner is such a treat!!! Do you have a leave in conditioner you can recommend?? I currently use Organic root stimulator moisture setting lotion, mixed with shea butter and olive oil as I wear a lot of twist outs. However my hair still feels either brittle or too oily ;(..
