My Story

SONY DSC

I went natural in November 2004. It was the right time for me. I had worn a relaxer for 5 years at the time and found myself wondering about my natural hair more and more. I knew I was tired of the straight look and wanted more bounce, versatility and freedom of style (ironically enough, these are some of the reasons people mention for getting a relaxer). I was not sure if I’d like my natural hair for two reasons, one being that I did not know how to style it prior to relaxing in my teen years and I never wore my hair short before (not counting the self-administered haircut at 5 that left me nearly bald).
Thinking about going natural brought on a lot of emotions. On any given day, I would go from excited, to concerned and then just petrified, then back to excited. I played with the decision for a few months, and then one day I broke down and told my stylist that I was going natural. She told me it was a phase and I’d be crazy to cut off all this beautiful hair and that I’d regret it eventually (yeah, my stylist was a very opinionated and to-the-point woman). Needless to say, we severed our ties, and so the journey began. I was doing my own hair full-time with little guidance until I discovered hair forums. Well, many years later, I now know this was my best hair decision ever and one of the best decisions in my life really.
Nowadays, talking hair and hair care is one of my hobbies. Furthermore, I now take interest in the entire scope of hair health and scalp health. I figure, what better way to exonerate myself than to use my time-consuming little habit for the benefit of others :) ?  I am absolutely in love with textured hair, mine and yours quite frankly. I catch myself swooning at other women’ hair so much of the time :) . I look absolutely creepy staring I’m sure!
Back on topic, since I’ve played so long with my own hair and learned from so many inspiring women online, hopefully I can shed some light on a few issues for you. I am not a scientist nor a hairstylist, but I do not believe you need to be either to take care of your own hair.
Email me any questions you may have at Fleurzty@textureplayground.com.

Being natural has been a tremendous journey. Loving my hair opened the door to me contemplating my true beauty and true self, as well as spark my entrepreneurial spirit. I spoke of freedom earlier and it is freeing to be able to view beauty on a broader scale. Healthy hair truly is beautiful hair.

Hello,

I love the site! I was thinking about going back natural, especially now that I know I can switch back and forth, between the straight and curly hairstyles without using harmful chemicals, or damaging my hair. I used to get my hair pressed, until it started to get too costly. I decided one day to switch to a relaxer, and no I regret it, because my hair has broken off in the middle. I think I should have stayed natural. Anyway, I look forward to wearing natural styles now, and I think I may see what my hair looks like short. Worst case- I mean hey, that’s what weave is made for right? lol

Glad to know there is a Sisterhood of Natural Ladies waiting to welcome me with open arms. Thanks Fleurtzy!!! :)

Welcome to Texture Playground Purity Gardiner and welcome back to natural hair. I hope you find the information that is available on this site to your hair’s advantage. There are many other ladies here who are transitioning, so if you ever have a question or would like some advice on the process, I am sure they would be more than happy to assist. I am within reach as well, either via comments or emails. There are also a few posts here on short hairstyles that you can wear shortly after cutting your relaxed ends. Once again, welcome and enjoy!

Hi! I’m so excited to see you and this site! I’m excited to see someone natural with long hair. I’ve seen mostly short hair on all of the sites that I’ve been on so far. I’m a newbie to this natural thing and I’m excited but sometimes afraid. I haven’t done the BC yet, though. I’ve been natural since, I think, July or August last year. I’m afraid of the BC only because my husband doesn’t want my hair short and I’m so afraid that he won’t like it. I absolutely love the hair styles you display on the site. YOU GO GIRL!

Peace,Love,Blessings,and…CINNAMON ROLLS!!

Love your site. As you know, I decided awhile back to go natural. I went from a short fade, to relaxed hair and decided I wanted to go back to be natural. So, I had the relaxer cut out of my hair and twisted it until it was long enough to lock. So I have a salt and pepper grey locks. Going natural, my hair just grows and grows.

I love that you are also writing. You have a special talent there. Keep it up. You will inspire me to start a blog.

I just wanted to let you know I love your site and your videos. I stopped relaxing my hair abt 8 years ago, between the coloring and relaxing my hair was getting really damaged and I knew I had to do something. I stopped relaxing but didn’t start taking care of my hair (less heat etc..) until about three years ago. Now my hair is healthier but because its very curly I need ideas on how to style it and more on how to care for it, thats why I really like your site.

Hey Girlie!

First of all, I want to congratulate you again!!!

I first used your products this weekend to twist my hair after washing it with the intentions that I will use a wig for church this morning on top of the twist. Well, by curiosity, I untwisted them before using the wig and I was amazed of how GREAT my hair looked. Long story short, I will be going to work with my natural hair this week and I am grateful for you sis.…and my hubby…,well, he loves the way my hair feel & look so much, now I also have to order for my mother-in-law as well. May God bless you and pour out His blessings on you.
